Women In STEM with Cassandra Reese
On this episode of The Dr. Will Show, I hangout with Cassandra Reese and we chat about her experiences as a woman in STEM.
received her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of San Diego in 2014. She then moved to Hattiesburg, MS in fall 2014 to pursue her Ph.D. in under the guidance of Dr. Derek Patton at the University of Southern Mississippi. Her works focuses on polymer surfaces, which can be applicable to a variety of applications (tunable adhesives, flexible electronics, antiwetting surfaces). Cassandra is strongly involved in campus and community outreach activities. Specifically, Cassandra served as the President for the Women in Science and Organization (WISE) organization at from 2016-2017, and the Vice President from 2017-present. The mission of WISE at USM is to retain and empower women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) by offering mentoring, support, and inspiration. During her WISE presidency, she was involved in submitting a grant through USM Foundation, titled “Retention of Women in STEM”, which ultimately got funded. This grant allowed the WISE officers to host their 1st Annual : WISE with RISE, The Power of You!

She has worked in the corporate arena for over 10 years, with experience in the areas of legal compliance, corporate governance, and human resources.
Years ago, Lakrisha felt as though her was at a standstill. She just couldn’t find a satisfying or lucrative enough career no matter how hard she tried. She was barely making it financially, and felt empty going into work everyday because she knew she had a greater calling.
Like many other , Lakrisha had done everything right: graduated college with high honors, gained valuable experience and always made a good impression. She started to feel like her only option was to settle because life seemed to be throwing her nothing but lemons. Deep down she knew she deserved better.
Eventually, Lakrisha decided that enough is enough. She was determined to turn things around and put every ounce of her into creating the career and life that she loved.
In just 4 weeks, she had secured her dream position, and more than doubled her salary. She was astounded. Lakrisha knew that she wanted to share what she'd learned with other women.
